Feb 4, 2024

Adéla Klečková, commented for Hospodářské noviny on the Russian disinformation campaign targeting Czech Senator Miroslava Němcová.

The recent disinformation campaign targeting Czech Senator Miroslava Němcová underscores the evolving landscape of digital manipulation. A falsified tweet, allegedly from Němcová, spread rapidly through European disinformation networks before being amplified by Russian media, ultimately leading to a direct death threat from former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.

“This case highlights the presence of a well-funded, coordinated network of trolls, cyber mercenaries, and disinformation actors operating across Europe, financed by the Kremlin,” explains our Senior Cyber Risks Fellow, Adéla Klečková, in a comment for Hospodářské noviny.

The rise of AI-generated deepfakes, manipulated images, and synthetic voice recordings will make it increasingly difficult to distinguish fact from fiction. According to Adéla, the Czech public, journalists, and policymakers must be prepared for a wave of sophisticated disinformation campaigns designed to manipulate public discourse and shape political outcomes.
